Economical Constraints of Life with a Chronic Illness

Life with a Chronic Illness is a lot harder than you may think. I say that because I not only live with one illness, but I live with four Chronic Illnesses. All of my illnesses require me to take medication, and those medications can be costly if you don't have insurance or if you are on disability with Medicare. I see and hear all too often that many people especially diabetics are falling ill because they are rationing their medication,  and they are unable to pay for the necessary medications to keep them alive. I myself had to deal with this, and I have to admit that it was all so shocking to me to find out, that my seizure meds cost less with my Medicare insurance and GoodRX. I was also able to receive my test strips at a much lower cost; but there was something missing.....MY INSULIN!!! The problem is a medication that I NEED, I was unable to purchase because even with the prescription savings program and my insurance, I was required to pay $1100 out of pocket for four vi...

Teachable Moments

I know it's been a while since you have heard from me, and I'm sure you're wondering why. I've been on an emotional rollercoaster that has taken me through many changes. It was an eye opening moment that required me to dig deep within myself and get my life in order. A few things caused me to say, "Hey, things are not as they seem, so pray about it and Let Go and Let God!" First, I watched America's Got Talent and saw an Angel by the name of Kodi Lee come on that stage with the assistance of his mother; as he is Autistic and Blind. His spirit and energy alone, made me realize that no matter what you are going through in life you must remain positive. Kodi stepped out on FAITH and came on that AGT Stage and had not a worry in the world. He sang one of my favorite songs by Donnie Hathaway, and he sang it with such conviction that he had the entire room in awe. I looked at him and his family and quickly came to understand that there is no woe is me attitude,...

Finding your inner WARRIOR!

We all know that life with a chronic illness is tough, but finding your inner WARRIOR is a special task. I'm sure many of you are fighting everyday to move about and make it through the day. I sometime find myself in the position of making and hiding behind the pain, but I also realize that there is no need to hide...just share my testimony with others. There was a point in my life that I felt like I could get through without telling anyone all the obstacles that I was dealing with. Most people feel like life stops when you get diagnosed with an illness; for me life just began. I had to make a decision rather quickly whether I was going to allow these illnesses take over my life or tackle them head on. It was 6 years ago this month that I birthed my nonprofit.  It was a way to provide a platform for individuals living with multiple illnesses to see that there is life after diagnosis!!! I'm sure people have counted you out, but you have to reach down to the pit of your soul a...

Be Your Best You!

Chronic illness and pain should never stop you from living your best life. It should allow you to be the best you, and pursue all dreams and aspirations. Many people ask me, " How do you deal with all you have to deal with and still continue to smile daily?" My answer is simple: HE is not done with me yet! I am still here on this side of the river, and the LORD saw fit to keep me here so that I may share my story with others. No, I do not have all the answers, but I am determined to be and do my best at all cost. Yes, I live with multiple illnesses, and none of those illnesses stops me from making my dreams a reality. I want to build a Health and Wellness brand that encompasses all that I have a passion for: knowledge and understanding of illnesses, knowing and understanding your body and all it has to endure, personal training and nutrition. I embarked on this journey, not knowing if it would be successful or not; how people would receive the information I am providing. I ...

Happy New Year! Out with the OLD, in with the NEW!

We made it! Let's come together and be proud of the fact that another year has passed, and we get the chance to get it right for 2019! Last year brought heartache and pain, various doctor visits and memories that last a lifetime; but one thing it did not bring is DEFEAT! Many of you know that I live with various illnesses, and many ask me how do I do it...my answer is simple MY FAITH! My mother had been sick for a long time, and she was in and out of the hospital, having various surgeries, and through it all her FAITH never wavered. Yes, she always said being sick sucked, but through it all she prayed, and her family prayed with and for her. I found myself in a position of uncertainty, and that uncertainty caused me to stress and ultimately become sick myself. I found myself stressed to the point where I wouldn't eat, I wouldn't take my medication properly, I couldn't sleep and that took a toll on my body. I lost so much weight over time that I often was asked how am ...

Breakthrough Seizures

It happened.....After 8 years of being seizure free, and having my seizures being controlled with medication, it happened! Sitting at home, watching TV with my love, he was also multitasking, so he left the living room for only a minute....and it began. According to my husband, he heard me making a grunting sound; and so he felt compelled to yell my name, when I didn't respond he got louder and yelled my name again, finally, he yelled one last time to only walk back into the living room to see me going through a seizure. I have no recollection of exactly when it happened, or even how long I was seizing; but I can honestly say that I am grateful for my husband, who knew just what to do.  I have to say that i was confused and upset at the same time, because in all honesty I never felt the seizure coming on, nor did I feel awkward. In all my years of living with Epilepsy, I always had a sign that a seizure was about to occur; such as slurred speech, muscle twitches or even my tell t...

Talking with your kids!

How often do you talk with your kids about your illness? Do you feel like they are too young to understand the illness and all that goes a long with it? Well, what if I told you that our kids are smarter than we give them credit for, and to my surprise can be a great help in your time of need. When I was pregnant with my daughter, my husband and I already were dealing with my various illnesses with just the both of us. I quickly realized that when my daughter came into this world, but more importantly when she was old enough, I would explain all of my illnesses to her in full detail. My reason for this was because my husband and I did not want her to be in the dark about why mommy was sick, or why mommy has to stay overnight in the hospital, or why does mommy take medication? These were all questions that I wanted to answer for her, as well as I want her to be ready for what may come if she is with me and there is no one around. I believe that all children are smart...so my convers...
